Black Quote

“Do you need god to live a spiritual life? I suppose so, if youre desperate for an authority figure whos invisible, but can be tasted in communion. Cant you just practice what jesus preaches and live a good and upright life. Isnt that spiritual enough? What if you did do that, and because you didnt believe in god he asent you to hell? Well for me that would surely justify not believing in him in the first place. Especially if hes gonna be such a prick.” –Lewis Black, from his book, Me of Little Faith

I love this quote because it says exactly what I’ve always thought, but in a better way than i could’ve said it. I don’t claim to know whether or not a god exists. Almost everything is explainable by science. Science basically disproves every story in the bible, if logic failed to do so beforehand. That is, to a point. There are still some things which science cannot yet explain, such as the origin of the universe, and when scientists cannot explain something, they may even attribute it to a god factor. So who the hell knows? I don’t. Anyone who says they know for sure are full of shit.

What I do know is that I don’t need there to be a god in order to be a good person. If i am going to do something, it’s because it’s what I believe is the right thing to do, not because I think it’s waht Jesus would do. I have my own morals and values that I have developed and am still developing. I rarely went to church or read the bible as a youngster, but I was still able to conclude that its probably a bad idea to murder or steal or lie. I didn’t need a book to figure that out. But thats just me.

If you want to read the bible for inspiration, cool. There are some awesome passages and quotes that can definitely help you be a better person. But its no different than quotes from Einstein or Martin Luther King Jr., except that we know those people definitely existed. It is when you start taking the stories literally that it becomes foolish. A giant boat with every animal and insect on it for 40 days? Come on. I mean, come on.

Who am I, and why should you give a crap?

Obviously, I am Anthony. Occasionally I will have a thought. Most of the time when this occurrs, it is somewhat random. This thought may or may not be very fully thought out. Nevertheless, I try to jot down reminders on my iphone, and then post them on this here blog. I am new to the whole blogging thing, so hang with me.

Hating on LeBron James

Listening to the new Eminem cd, which is actually very good, I realized that Eminem is more competitive than LeBron James. Here’s the proof, a line from one of his songs;

“To spaz with the pen, I’m a little bit sicker than most
Shit’s finna get thick again
They say the competition is stiff
But I get a hard dick from this shit, now stick it in
I ain’t never giving in again
Caution to the wind, complete freedom
Look at these rappers, how I treat ’em
So why the fuck would I join them when I beat ’em”

So basically, Lebron’s train of thought is “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em”, while Eminem has struggled through 3 or 4 self-proclaimed-as-not-good albums and worked hard to become good again at what he does, by himself, leading his own way.

So after this new album by Eminem, we know that he is one of the best rappers ever. People thought that his first 3 albums were only successful because they were controversial, and that he was only talented because he was on drugs. Then he let out 3 laughable albums and everyone said it was because he was no longer on drugs. Now he refocuses and puts out a great album, using a few prominent rappers (Lil Wayne, Rihanna, etc) in featured roles and proves that he is genuinely talented. If he were more like LeBron, he would have called up Jay-Z or Kanye West and offered to play a major role on one of their albums.

I am never a fan of comparing current sports stars to past greats, but if there was ever going to be a present day equivalent to Michael Jordan, LeBron is entirely out of the question. Scottie Pippen, maybe. Nothing wrong with Scottie Pippen, but as a sports fan, it’s just disappointing to watch a superstar bitch out and team up with his rivals and not get to watch one of the potentially greatest players ever be just that.
